Welcome to my new ‘What should I know about cancer?’ series. Stay with me over the coming months as I break cancer down into bite-sized pieces to read at your leisure. Let’s start with some basics... 🤓
📊1 in 2 people in NSW will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. Prostate, breast, melanoma, lung and bowel cancer are the most common type of cancers, making up nearly half of all cases diagnosed. Cancer is not a death sentence though. About 70% of people with cancer in Australia will still be alive five years after treatment. Many cancers have survival rates of 85% or higher. ⚠️There are different risk factors for different types of cancer. You can’t change things like getting older or having a family history of cancer but about one in three cancer cases can be prevented through healthy choices. You can reduce your risk by stopping smoking, protecting your skin from the sun, drinking less alcohol, exercising more, being a healthy weight, eating more fruit and veges and cutting down on red and processed meat. 🧴🎀One of the best ways to reduce the impact of cancer is to participate in our bowel, breast and cervical screening programs at the appropriate ages and to be on the lookout for any changes in your body. You can talk to your GP about how to check your skin and breasts or testicles regularly to monitor for change and what might be early signs or symptoms of other cancers, such as lung, prostate and ovarian, needing further investigation. You can’t catch cancer from someone else. It is not contagious. 🩺For more info, talk to your GP or Aboriginal health worker and visit @cancercouncil or @cancer__australia And let me know below if you’d like any particular topics covered 👇 @tourdecureaus @yerinedahc @ahmrc_nsw @yourfamilydoctors @the_racgp @customs4cancer @auscervicalcancerfoundation @bcnapinklady @nbcfaus @bowelcanceraustralia #cancereducation #cancerawareness #cancerfacts #cancermyths #cancer #health #medicalfacts #medicaladvice #cyclingdoctor #australiandoctors #generalpractice #rideforcancer #letscurecancer #befitbehealthybehappy #stayactive #healthyweight #superdogsdrelly_warren
